Hay Market Demand and Price Report for the Upper Midwest

Demand and Sales Comments

The hay market is stronger. Lower quality hay increased about a $10.00 per ton this week. Weather
may have caused concern and brought buyers to the table with colder temperatures and snow in some
areas.

There are many reports of wet field conditions and delays in the fall harvest.

For Nebraska, hay sold steady, demand was moderate with instances of good demand from out of state buyers.  For Iowa, a lot of buyers went home empty handed this week as hay availability was short. Some sellers are waiting for higher prices to bring product to the auction.

In South Dakota, all classes of hay were steady to firm, good to very good demand for high testing
hay, moderate demand for lower quality hay. There was an abundant supply of lower quality hay.

For Missouri, hay prices are steady to weak, with light to moderate demand. Hay movement is slow.
Weather conditions may push some hay harvest to post freezing time.

In Southwest Minnesota, prices were steady with no top quality hay available at the market and a
decrease in offerings compared to last week.

In Wisconsin, quality alfalfa hay is in demand and there was an increase in prices this week. Wet
weather is delaying fall harvest operations. Colder weather and some snow may motivate farmers to
purchase hay in the near future.

Straw prices were steady this past week. Small square bale straw price was steady at $2.90 a bale
(range of $2.00 to $6.00). Large square bale straw was steady at $42.00 per bale (a wide range of
$30.00 to

$70.00). Large round bale straw was stronger and averaged $47.00 per bale (a wide range of $25.00 -
$80.00).
