South Dakota Weekly Hay Summary

All prices per ton, unless noted, FOB the stack.

Compared to last week: All classes of hay remain steady to firm.
Good to very good demand for high testing hay suitable for use by
dairies, supplies of this quality of hay are very tight. Moderate
demand for lower quality alfalfa, supplies much more abundant. Good
demand for high quality grass hay to start calves in the feedyards.
Good demand for corn stalks and straw, for bedding use and for grinding
into feedlot rations. Very muddy pen conditions is increasing the
need for bedding, especially for incoming spring calves. The sun
finally came out this week firming the ground allowing combines to
get out and get back to harvesting. More warm weather will be needed
to get corn stalks dry enough to bale after the excessive rains of the
past weeks. All hay and straw sold by the ton FOB, unless otherwise
noted.
