Missouri Weekly Hay Summary

Week ending 10/12/2018

The old saying goes something like if you don’t like the weather wait
five minutes. Well the weather has sure made a turn. Much cooler
temperatures have arrived leading many farmers to dig the flannel shirt
or jacket out from behind the pickup seat and shake the dust off. The
bigger story this week however, was rain and not just a little bit but
8-10 inches in several areas of north Missouri with a large part of the
state getting in 3-5 range. Needless to say many of the fields that had
combines in just a week ago are now under water. Hay movement slowed
tremendously due to the rain as several major roads flooded and hay
pens and fields are too muddy to get in and out of. The supply of hay
has increased as there was significant baling before the rains which
is a tremendous boost before feeding season gets underway. Hay prices
are steady to weak. Hay demand is light to moderate. The Missouri
Department of Agriculture has a hay directory available for both
buyers and sellers. To be listed, or for a directory visit
http://mda.mo.gov/abd/haydirectory/ for listings of hay
