Weekly Montana Hay Report

Compared to last week: Alfalfa hay prices sold mostly firm with
instances of 5.00 higher seen for some sales. With many ranchers 
marketing their livestock over the past few weeks this has freed 
up funds and allowed ranchers to purchase hay for winter. Hay 
market activity this week was mostly active with many ranches 
buying hay. Dairies were also in the market this week buying
high quality hay. Demand for dairy quality hay was mostly 
moderate to good as many dairies in Washington and Idaho were
active market participants. Demand for hay to go to Colorado 
and other southern drought states continues to be good as well 
with loads leaving weekly. Producers who are cutting 3rd cutting 
have had a very good stretch of weather to put it up as weather 
conditions have been outstanding across much of the state. 
Grazing conditions continue to be good with many cows still out 
on range. This continues to curb demand for hay to some degree.
